Aubrey’s Health Journey – Part III

January 1st, 2017 was the day that I started the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) and this is what I have learned along the way.

By this point in time I had learned how toxic the Standard American Diet (SAD) is for our bodies and I made the conscious decision to switch to a more primal, whole-foods diet to heal my body of chronic illness and inflammation. What I did not know was that I could take my healing to an even higher level of nutrient-density by following the Autoimmune Protocol. No, I was not diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and still do not have one to this day, but I figured it could not do me any more harm and I might just be able to design the perfect diet for my own body. That is exactly what happened!

I committed to the AIP for 90-days and then began reintroducing foods but I was not patient enough, I rushed my reintroductions and could not pin-point what was causing my flares and what my body could actually process.. I started once more in April of 2017 and have been in the strict elimination phase ever since with the exception of Christmas Eve and Day. The Holidays were much easier for me to cope with this time around but there were still many temptations and my will-power was not as strong as I had hoped. There is good news, even though I ate whatever I wanted for those two days, it allowed me to feel stress-free and I was not obsessing over whether or not I will get a flare. Luckily, I did not get one and I am hoping that is because my diet and lifestyle have been so clean this past year compared to previous years.

The most important lesson that I have learned from partaking in the AIP is that my flares are mainly triggered by stress. Yes, it is true that I have food sensitivities but they do not cause me as much harm if I am not stressed out. Two years, 18 practitioners, countless medicals tests and hours of research have all led me to realize just how powerful our minds can be over our physical body. I now know that my main culprit all along has been stress that causes my skin to flare.

Even if you do not choose to change your diet as dramatically as I have, I hope that you take time to de-stress every day and appreciate this life we are given.
